The Sound of Falling is a tapestry of lyric imagery, a weaving together of grief and redemption, memory and love, family and loss, absence and affirmation; in short, that which makes us human. It begins with the poet’s father’s embrace of an unseen future, the rising wave of grief before that father’s impending death, and the aftermath as that sea receded. It continues with a journey through the diagnosis, in utero, of a granddaughter’s life-threatening defect, her tumultuous first few weeks, and the gut-wrenching gratitude and grief that comes with a life made possible by another’s death. What follows are poems of mystery and wonder and, finally, the recognition that ...like time, love burns as if a fire that, no matter how warm, is never long enough.

Like fire spilling into molten gold, Fowlkes' poetry comes to us from some place other than the age of Sheen, Kardashian, and Hilton. He collects our grief in vessels and offers us courage, a more compassionate distance, a band that plays the light in gold, the long view of time, and a sense of love that burns like fire but never long enough. A great read for those who value elegant writing, grace under pressure, and a life well-lived over 15 minutes of fame.Product details

The Sound of Falling Vernon Fowlkes Jr 9780942544848 Books Reviews
I count Vernon as a long-time friend. I'm not typically a poetry reader, other than perhaps Dylan lyrics. I'm nearly done reading The Sound of Falling. Dammit, Vernon, stop making me weep. Well, okay then, don't.
This collection is a rare gem among poetry books from small presses. It combines beautiful images and wording with intelligent, insightful observations about life, death and love. A good read all around!
Mr. Fowlkes' poetic craftsmanship with words creates lasting images, peaceful, yet haunting with a hard to shake presence. He may have invented a new genre Zen Punk Poetry. His gift is worth sharing to anyone who needs a jolt electrical enlightenment.
"The Sound of Falling" is the rising of a fine poetic voice which speaks to those things we are all heir to a father's death, a child's illness. It also, first and foremost, points us as sure as a signpost on a tangled path to that which makes us humane though tenuous as light-ultimately, tenderly, enduring. When Fowlkes tells us "At winter's end we'll wake and walk into a world we've never seen, but have slept in all along", we can surely believe him. For those who cherish language at its best, this is a marvelously wrought book.
